About the play
A day in the life of Llaregyb, on the Welsh coast, begins: “It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, courtiers'-and-rabbits’ wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea.”

Two narrators take us through to the evening, introducing a multitude of colourful characters going about their business: Captain Cat, Rosie Probert, Gossamer Beynon, Organ Morgan, Willy Nilly Postman, Polly Garter, Dai Bread, Nogood Boyo and many more. The language used is Anglo-Welsh.

The first reading is open to all, but it would be useful to know roughly how many people to expect. You could register your interest via Facebook or by e-mail (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). If you'd like to be involved but can’t make it on September 8, please let me know.

Popcorn, by Ben Elton (rehearsed reading)

Popcorn, by Ben Elton

WHAT: Popcorn by Ben Elton
WHEN: Friday 25 January, 7 pm
WHERE: FINNBRIT, Fredrikinkatu 20 A 9 (Map)
COST: €4

A rehearsed reading of "Popcorn", by Ben Elton, directed by Pauliina Munukka.

"Violent people create a violent society. They do it, not me, not anyone else. They are to blame."

Bruce Delamitri makes movies. Violent movies. As his passionate encounter with model/actress Brooke Daniels is interrupted by Wayne and Scout, aka the Mall Murderers, the night quickly escalates into a hostage situation where no one is safe. "Popcorn" is a fast-paced satirical black comedy that puts the question who is to blame under the microscope.

The play is not recommended for children.

NOTE: This play reading is a performance. In a rehearsed reading, the actors will be familiar with their lines, but will still have their scripts. There will be some costumes, props and movement, but not to the extent of a full production.

Tickets are available on the door, but numbers are limited. To avoid disappointment it is recommended that you order tickets from the Webshop.

Set in the Beverly Hills home of Tarantino-style, Popcorn Oscar-winning movie director Bruce Delamitri, When notorious killers Wayne and Scout interrupt Bruce's passionate introduction to Brooke Daniels (nude model and actress), they want more than an autograph from their cinematic idol. Wayne intends to use Bruce's art as justification for murder. Events are disrupted with the arrival of Karl (Bruce's producer) and Farrah Delamitri (Bruce's soon-to-be ex-wife) with spoilt teenage daughter, Velvet. But Wayne means to succeed – whatever the cost.

Rehearsed Play Readings

As mentioned earlier in the year, the Players cancelled the monthly play readings through lack of interest, both in attendance and running. We promised that the readings would be back in the form of a rehearsed play reading every few months. Unfortunately, FBP events and the summer have delayed the organisation of this, and the proximity of FELT IF means that the first rehearsed play reading performance will not happen until the New Year. However, here follows the idea:

A director submits a proposal for a rehearsed reading to the FBP Committee, along with a date to perform the reading at the FBS premises. If agreed, the director holds 3-5 readings at the FBS premises, the first of which is a relaxed audition. The reading will be performed to an audience in the more relaxed environment at FBS in Fredrikinkatu.

The purpose of this new arrangement is to give the people who are new to the Players (and maybe new to acting), along with those who historically have only attended the play readings, the chance to actually perform in a gentle and friendly way and without the pressures and stresses of a full production with a paying audience.

As mentioned above, we want to get the ball rolling in the New Year. As such, we now invite offers of directors with a play to rehearse (starting after FELT IF at the earliest). Please only submit a proposal if you are prepared to direct the rehearsed reading through to performance.

March 2012 Play Reading - Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris

WHAT: Play reading - Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris
WHERE: FINNBRIT, Fredrikinkatu 20 A 9 (Map)
WHEN: Friday, 23rd March, 7pm

Carol Norris will lead a reading of Bruce Norris' Clybourne Park, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

This topical satire, set in current-day Chicago, puts a modern spin on issues of race relations, property, and dreams of a better life.

In 1959, a white couple sell their home for a knock-down price, enabling the first black family to move into the neighbourhood. In 2009, the same property is bought by another white couple in what is now an all-black neighbourhood. Discussions about renovations and zoning rules soon degenerate into talk about racial issues...
