Lola of the Light

Lolo pic crop editedPATIENT FILE: DOLORES DE LA LUZ CALDERÓN.
YOUNG WOMAN. FOUND WANDERING ALONE IN THE DESERT.
DELUSIONS CONCERNING THE PHONE.
PERSISTENTLY A RESTLESS CASE.

A rainy afternoon twenty years ago. Somewhere between Barcelona and Zaragoza. A young Mexican woman named Lola comes in to use the phone after her car has broken down. At least this is what she tells the people she meets inside.

The Finn-Brit Players invite you on a madness-provoking journey into a place where the most innocent request is met with suspicion and concern. After all, if you alone knew the truth, how could you convince anyone else of what was real? How could you convince yourself? After enough time, anyone would go crazy.

“Phones, phones, phones... Sometimes I get the feeling that we are nothing but phones anymore, we people. Do you ever feel like that?”

Written and directed by Jarkko Mikkola.

Lola – Sarah Puukka
Sempronio – Kheba Touray

Educating Rita

ER Final Banner 960x540 Educating Rita by Willy Russell is a charming, funny, surprisingly-profound modern-take on the Pygmalion myth. It is the story of Rita, a young working-class woman in 1980s Liverpool, who decides that she wants to study literature: she doesn’t want to just change channels when the ballet or the opera comes on the telly and say “That’s fuckin’ rubbish”. She takes an extracurricular literature course with Frank, an embittered lecturer, as her tutor. During the course of a year, and the play, they both grow, and grow together, and grow apart. The play was originally a great success with Julie Walters in the lead role, and was made into a movie with her and Michael Caine.

Small Mouth Sounds

Does the idea of a silent retreat in the woods fill you with joy or horror? In Bess Wohl's Small Mouth Sounds, six people escape city life for five days of distraction-free meditation, contemplation and healing: no smartphones and no small talk. Yet soon their need for human connection comes into conflict with their vows of silence. How do you speak your mind when you can't say a word?

This award-winning play from 2016 is both serious and absurd, and filled with awkward and insightful humour. Passport Theatre and the Finn-Brit Players are once again teaming up to bring you some excellent yet less-recognised voices in contemporary theatre.

CONTENT WARNING This play contains adult themes, strong language and nudity, and is not suitable for children.

Orange Alert

OA title image 2Man-made climate change has long been scientifically accepted, and yet most of mankind continues business as usual. Seized by age-old power struggles and the lust for profit, most pay no heed to the unfolding crisis, which has no respect for either political or social borders. In short, we are all in the same pan and it’s getting hotter!

Although we haven’t yet grown up enough to match Greta’s spirit, we aim to add our own contribution to the global cause. We present ORANGE ALERT, a climate reality show that seeks to raise awareness in an entertaining manner through a variety of artforms:

SONGS & MUSIC from Rebecca Clamp and Hans Wessels; John Millar and Tony Shaw; Mira Berglund-Fitzpatrick
POETRY by John Leo & Diliana Stoyanova
PERFORMANCE by Veriprikaati – The Red Rebel Brigade

DRAMA & SKETCHES from Mikael Kivimäki, Matias Kylliäinen & Marietta Chela; Vladislav Nenchev, Sarah Puukka, Dish Eldishnawy & Jaakko Hutchings
and SLIDE SHOWS by David Rogers, Till Sawala & Baida Embarec

Each of the pieces takes its own approach to the themes of nature or climate change – from informative to beautiful to downright hilarious! So join us to learn more about the global climate crisis and what can be done to resolve it, because solutions are definitely within our grasp.

WANA Facebook Event web

We Are Not Amused by Ulf Persson & the cast

Directed by Ulf Persson Meri Kuikka

We Are Not Amused is a late talkshow. Late in the meaning of dead. Very dead. The Finn-Brit Players proudly presents a talkshow in which the guests are three very famous and very dead women:
Elisabeth “Sisi”, Empress of Austria & Queen of Hungary (Laura Alemañola)
Victoria, Queen of Great Britain & Empress of India (Emily Matthews)
Diana, the People’s Princess (Meri Kuikka)

They are here to chat about their dramatic and interesting lives with the Host (Graham Lees) – but his guests are not all that amused. Come and find out why….

Two for the price of one! We Are Not Amused will be preceded by a short supporting feature:

Going Viral by Zoë Chandler

Junk mail through your letterbox, popups on your computer, a neverending parade of billboards, screens and totems…. Sometimes it feels as if there’s no escape from advertising. But if you think things are bad now, you’d better watch out for the next megatrend. The future of advertising is here and now there really is no escape.

Hay Fever

Hay Fever facebook event image

Hay Fever by Noël Coward

Directed by Adrian Goldman

Produced by The Finn-Brit Players and Passport Theatre

It is May in Helsinki, the flowers are out, pollen is in the air and Hay Fever is coming to town. This delightful comedy is arguably Noël Coward’s finest and funniest play. It is set in the late 1920s in the Bliss’ country house. The utterly self-absorbed and eccentric Bliss family have all, unbeknownst to each other, invited guests down for the weekend. Love, laughter and drama ensues. The play is best described as a “high comedy of ill manners.” As Mark Fisher in the Guardian wrote “This … subversive 1925 comedy is the missing link between William Shakespeare and Edward Albee”.

This international production has a cast of professionals, semi-professionals and wannabees: Stephanie Carlson (Judith Bliss), Demian Stimson (David Bliss), Hosanna Megumi (Sorel Bliss), Mikael Kivimäki (Simon Bliss), Jess Hollmeier (Myra Arundel), Alistair Logan (Richard Greatham), Elina Jackson (Jackie Coryton), Todd Elliott (Sandy Tyrell), and Sophie Michaud (Clara).

Do not miss this wonderfully delicious and malicious high comedy of summer where the people bite harder than the mosquitoes.
