Underfoot Folk Club

Underfoot posterA folk night featuring bands that dwell like fungus in the cellars of Helsinki. They’ll crawl out of the plug sockets and spawn onto the stage with raucous, touching and raucously touching Americana, Scottish, Irish, English and Finnish folk music old and new.

This is the first of a new folk club night featuring five bands offering a wide variety of entertainment. The groups showcase Americana, Celtic, English and Finnish folk music old and new, with a jazz-rock kicker from band Paracetämol.

Ceol argus Craic features traditional and contemporary Irish and Scottish tunes including some songs in Irish Gaelic sung by Conor Cleneghan.

Pied Piper play 70s-style English folk music, referencing Anne Briggs, Pentangle and Steeleye Span. Amanda Arttio and Max Van der Kamp.

The Folk Boomers play songs in Finnish and English from the 1950s and 1960s American folk boom era. Featuring autoharp and bass ukulele.

Paracetämol are a duo of musicians who are pushing at the edges of jazz-tinted experimental guitar and bass instrumentals. Sami Oksanen and Anton Salokoski.

The Toukola Mogs trio perform an acoustic set from a range of eclectic soft rock covers.

Save the NoName Theatre!

coronavirus 5086544 1280  Help us save the NoName Theatre!   coronavirus 5107832 1280

After eighteen months of enforced closures and crippling restrictions, the Finnish government has still given very little financial or other support to amateur and semi-professional theatres – and even our theatre's application for corona support was denied. And as a small independent theatre, we receive no other government or municpal funding. Even though we have finally been able to launch the autumn season, socially distanced seating will continue to severely reduce our audience capacity and makes it almost impossible to cover the actual costs of staging productions: fewer seats means less income per show, but our fixed costs remain exactly the same.

Many independant theatres, like ours, are therefore still in dire straits. There is already a severe lack of theatre space in Helsinki – and in particular affordable space. As grants for cultural activities are difficult to acquire, many small groups and individuals simply cannot afford to rent a venue and are blocked from realising their cultural projects. The death of one of the few reaming affordable theatres would also mean the death of many performing arts projects for years to come.

Which is why we’re continuing our campaign to help the theatre survive until next year. The campaign will run from 16 September to 15 December 2021. All contributions will go in full to paying the rent on the theatre. So, if you value the rich world of fringe theatre in Finland, please check out the events and give something if you can!

Save the NoName Theatre!

coronavirus 5086544 1280  Help us save the NoName Theatre!   coronavirus 5107832 1280

After a full year of enforced closures and crippling restrictions, the Finnish government has still given ZERO financial or other support to amateur and semi-professional theatres. Most theatres will likely not be able to open again until the autumn – and even then, socially distanced seating will continue to halve their income.

Theatres with fixed rental costs – like the NoName Theatre – are now in dire straits.

Which is why we’re launching a campaign to help the theatre survive until autumn. The campaign will run from 17 March to 16 June 2021 and will be supported by a variety of online events by various theatre companies who use the NoName Theatre. All contributions will go in full to paying the rent on the theatre. So, if you value the rich world of fringe theatre in Finland, please check out the events and give something if you can!

This funding campaign is now over, and donations can no longer be made.

Save our theatre!

The Finn-Brit Players (FBP) is facing crisis. We usually either break even or record a modest surplus to fund the next adventure, but it's not always easy. COVID-19 has really scrambled our heads.

It's been hard to find any affordable venue in Helsinki for our performances; we dreamed of our own little theatre. We finally managed it; FBP is now the proud tenant of the former Höyhentämö-Pluckhouse theatre on Korkeavuorenkatu. We could also offer it at affordable rates to other groups for their own events.

Then, along came the SARS-CoV-2 virus and all potential sources of revenue suddenly evaporated. FBP is left with fixed monthly expenses and no income. The earliest we can cancel the lease is the end of October, by which time we may not be able to finance future productions.

Even when restrictions are eased we cannot operate the theatre at any capacity. The only available options for generating revenue for the rest of the year are through donations and outdoor or online events like play readings, “Zoom” plays, poetry readings, music, etc. for which voluntary modest fees could be suggested. These events will generate limited revenue and thus we must put significant effort into donations.

Our goal is to raise enough money by August to renew the theatre contract and keep the dream of our own theatre space alive into our new future. We're inviting you and all our friends and fans to give whatever you can afford to help us through this unavoidable crisis. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. Please visit our online shop to buy any playwraught-themed ticket to our future. (Or click directly on the links below.) Feel free to post this information on your own FB page if you would like to share with any friends you have that have enjoyed our shows.

With your permission, your name will eventually appear in a list of donors in some FBP channels and on our website. No contribution amounts will be shown on these pages. Anything and everything helps. Thank you.

NB The donation drive ended on 17 December 2020.
